A Math self-reflection with tools to move forward This book encourages readers to dig into their own life experiences with math。 It explores how readers can make changes in their lives that will change the narrative for others。 In reading this book, I realized that my unhealthy relationship with math could effect the way my children view math。 I am now inspired to jump in and help my kids work through difficult math problems instead of defaulting to the phrase "I'm not really a math person。" I w A Math self-reflection with tools to move forward This book encourages readers to dig into their own life experiences with math。 It explores how readers can make changes in their lives that will change the narrative for others。 In reading this book, I realized that my unhealthy relationship with math could effect the way my children view math。 I am now inspired to jump in and help my kids work through difficult math problems instead of defaulting to the phrase "I'm not really a math person。" I would recommend this book to teachers, parents, or anyone who is finds themselves with strong feelings about math。 。。。more
Susie and David Honsinger,
Outstanding - inspirational framework for math success This book would make an excellent book study for a math department。 The authors are a teacher and a student, and the way this teacher has approached equity and community building in the classroom is simply inspirational。 Lots of examples are provided。 I'm challenged to do better in my own classroom! Dear Math - interesting way to start a letter and a lesson! This is one book you will want to read sooner rather than later! The approach taken by Sarah Strong, an educator attempting to gain an understanding of her student’s relationship with Math, is innovative and can be used in other content areas。 Her process allowed her to create more authentic learning experiences for her students and not make assumptions about their understanding, interest, and needed support。 We know Math anxiety is real (you may relive or recall some of those anxiety inducing moments while reading student comments) and these stories are real。 The questions used to prompt student writing also transfers to other content areas。 Imagine if educators could uncover student’s real feelings and sense of belonging/understanding when in class for all content areas…WOW! And not to forget the co-author of this book is a former student of Strong’s。 Gigi Butterfield has been a learner in project based learning schools since elementary age。 What a testament to PBL and to have the authentic experiences to share with others! Thank you Sarah and Gigi for a very informative and enlightening read! I can’t wait to share with colleagues! 。。。more
